Imphal, May 15 2014 :
Strongly condemning the threat notice and subsequent telephone call for monetary demand by one Indu Leima of KCP, Manipur State Human Rights Protection, women vendors of Samurou Market staged a sit-in demonstration in the market shed today.
Speaking to media persons, Ningthoujam Ibemhal, a woman vendor, said that Indu Leima called her up demanding to hand over a sum of Rs 3 lakhs before May 20 and warned of dire consequences if the amount is not paid in time.
Recalling an instance where unidentified armed persons forcibly took away Rs 15 lakhs from the women vendors of the market in February, Ibemhal lamented that the fresh threat and monetary demand has come at a time when women vendors are reeling under financial troubles.
Several placards reading, 'Stop Threatening Us', 'Let Women Vendors work in peace' etc were used during the protest demonstration.
