Imphal, April 12 2015 :
NNN): Adding yet another number to the ever increasing crime against women and children in Manipur, a minor was allegedly raped by a local man in Lamshang area of Imphal West.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed against the incident on Sunday decided to ostracize the alleged rapist from his locality for seven years awarded as a penalty for the crime he had committed.
The committee also demanded stringent punishment to the rapist, and condemned the bail status given to the accused.
Speaking to the media persons at Manipur Press Club, H Bhuben, convenor of the JAC said that the minor, a Class III student, was raped by the local man on January 7 this year.
The accused has been identified as Khaidem Brojen (34), son of Kh Megha of Heibongpokpi Mamang Leikai under Lamshang Police Station.
The convenor alleged that Brojen raped the girl in her own home while her parents were out.
After the incident came to light, angry locals and family members of the victim lodged a complaint at the Women Police Station, Imphal West and an FIR was registered on the same day the incident happened.
Later, locals held a public meeting and formed a JAC against the incident on January 11 .
However, accused Brojen surrendered to the police the next day, January 12 .
The JAC had also submitted written complaints regarding the case to Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR), DGP of Manipur Police and the district SP.
But contrary to the expectations of the public, the accused was given bail on medical ground on March 23last, Bhuben added.
JAC spokesperson S Pari Khuman strongly condemned the rape incident and granting of bail to the accused.
He added that the JAC was demanding befitting punishment to the 'rapist' and that the letting him free by giving bail should be stopped immediately.
"Even if the accused has medical complication, he should be put behind the bars at the earliest and allow resuming his treatment in the prison only," he demanded.
