Representatives of the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) and 14 CSOs Kangleipak met Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam this evening regarding the demand to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the commencement of the census operation.
The meeting was convened at the official residence of Govindas at Babupara around 6 pm and lasted for nearly two hours.
The meeting was also attended by Commissioner (Home) N Ashokumar and Joint Secretary Dr M Veto among other Government officials.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said they urged the Home Minister to postpone the self-enumeration exercise, scheduled to begin on August 17 as part of the census operation, in line with their demand that the NRC be updated before the census by any means necessary.
He said the Home Minister took their demand seriously and agreed to discuss the issue with the Chief Minister later today.
He also clarified that the JFD had not withdrawn its movement.
14 CSOs Kangleipak convenor N Shanta said they may take legal action if their demand is not heeded.
