Imphal, August 10 2026: Several organisations and a large number of students staged sit-in protest demonstrations today, reinforcing the census boycott call raised by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) .

Students of Tamphasana Girls' Higher Secondary and CJFD Students' Wing staged a sit-in at the school's gate.

During the demonstration, CJFD Students' Wing convenor Naorem Wangamba said the State Government must make its stand on the NRC clear before the self-enumeration process related to hosuelisting exercise begins on August 17 .

The self-enumeration and houselisting exercise which is scheduled to begin in September are parts of Census 2027 .

The violent conflict which erupted on May 3, 2023 has not been resolved, and thousands of people who have been displaced are still languishing in relief camps.

Conducting houselisting and other census related exercises amid such circumstances is unacceptable, Wangamba said.

If the Government chooses to go ahead and begin the self-enumeration exercise, then it will be taken as a forceful ploy or policy to include illegal immigrants in the census and legitimise their citizenship, Wangamba said.

Updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the census is a must to identify illegal immigrants.

The Government should therefore take a concrete stand and make it known before the public before August 17, he added.

A similar sit-in protest demonstration reiterating demand for updating NRC was also held at the Wangkhei Leikai WAL Club ground.

The demonstration, held under the banner of the CJFD, was attended by members of different communities.

The protesters reaffirmed CJFD's census boycott call, and urged the Government to update NRC before census exercise.

Protesters held placards that read "NRC updation before Census", "No NRC, No Census", "No IDP Settlement, No Census" etc .
