Manipur State Shumang Leela Council (MSSLC) celebrated the 14th Shumang Leela Numit (Shumang Leela Day) at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen today.
Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Th Lokeshwor, Art and Culture Secretary K Radhakumar and social worker S Manaoton graced the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
This year's Iboyaima award was presented to noted Shumang Leela artiste Thounaojam Nobin of Kiyamgei at the occasion.
The award carries Rs 20,000 and a shawl.
Speaking at the occasion, Th Lokeshwor said that Shumang Leela not only entertains people but also educates the general public on different social ills.
This age-old art form also contributes significantly towards bringing an end to chaos, disunity and disharmony, he added.
In his speech, MSSLC lifetime president Gunachandra Sharma urged the public not to take Shumang Leela as an art form, which serves entertainment purpose alone.
It also portrays the social ills and contributes its mite in bringing unity and restoring harmony, he added.
Saying that Shumang Leela has two forms - contemporary and traditional - Gunachandra said that MSSLC has been putting in efforts to sustain the traditional value in different Shumang Leela plays.
