Full tapping of resources stressed

The state needs to fully utilise its land, soil and water resources in order to boost productivity in the agriculture sector and a proper policy programme will help in achieving the target, said agriculture department deputy director M Gojendro.
Attending the inaugural session of a four-day training programme on 'Rabi/Winter Crops' for functionaries of Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) organised by State Agriculture Management and Extension Training Institute, department of agriculture on Thursday, Gojendro said that the department is keen to make the arable land of the state profitable and ensure food and nutritional security to the people.
Since 70 per cent of the state's population depends on agriculture and allied sector for their living, there is strong need to bring improvement in the agriculture sector through boosting productivity, market facility and setting up warehouses or storage units.
Taking up initiatives for improving agriculture infrastructure will help the farmers in getting the right price for their hard works and improve their living standard, which in turn will bring socio-economic development in the state, he said.
Emphasising on the importance of agriculture department in ensuring these goals, Gojendro stressed on the role of department's field staff and ATMA functionaries working in different areas from maintenance of data and records to implementation of policies.
The officials also need to be innovative and ask themselves if they are doing enough service for the people for which they are getting salaries and allowances every month.
They need to become responsible officials in order to bring development in the sector and the state as well, he added.
Agriculture department deputy director Tondinang Panmei and deputy director Th Joy were also present in the inaugural function of the training programme.
