Imphal, December 17 2021:
Thingba Khullen villagers have lodged a complaint in Senapati police station against a political activist over alleged forgery and misappropriation of bank loans.
As per a statement signed by P Yuni and Th Danii of Thingba Khullen village, Tadubi sub-division, Senapati district, the accused person came to the village in August, 2015 and distributed some pineapple saplings to the two complainants and 15 other persons stating that it is being distributed as a part of a scheme taken up by the government.
Further, he also gave Rs 10,000 each to them as labour charge for the pineapple plantation.
The distribution programme was held at the waiting shed of Paoveito, Reafii village, it claimed.
The statement continued that to the shock and dismay of the 17 villagers, they recently received notices from the Central Bank of India (CBI), Senapati Branch, demanding payment of sums ranging from Rs 4,38,762 to Rs 7,31,163.Since none of these villagers had ever taken any loan from any bank including CBI Senapati Branch, they were appalled and did not know how the notices were issued to them.
Some of the villagers went to CBI Senapati Branch and enquired on the matter during which it came to light that the loan accounts in the name of the 17 villagers were opened in the Branch in the year 2015 .
Thereafter, a sum of Rs 4,80,000 were sanctioned to the aforesaid 17 loan accounts.
As the loan amount was not repaid, the interest kept on accumulating.
By the time the accounts become non-performing assets (NPAs) the outstanding amount swelled in the range of Rs 4,38,762 to Rs 7,31,163, it mentioned.
The release also alleged that as many as three accounts, the photo and Aadhaar cards did not match name oi the account holders.
These accounts were fraudulently opened by the accused person in conspiracy with the then CBI Senapati Branch officials and as such the loans were sanctioned without any knowledge of the complainants, they maintained.
After paying Rs 10,000 to each of the victims and some pineapple saplings, the rest of the sanctioned amounts were misappropriated by the accused persons.
When the villagers confronted the political activist, he admitted the wrongdoing but refused to clear the loan and threatened the villagers of dire consequences if they ever made any complaint against him, it further claimed.
Based on complaints of the two, Tadubi police station has registered a case and transferred the same to Senapati police station due to jurisdictional issues.
