Conflict analysis training kick-starts

Imphal, December 03 2012: With the objective of capacity building of all stakeholders including bureaucrats, journalists, academicians, civil society organisations and the general public, a three-week training programme on Conflict Analysis and Peace Building was kick-started today at Tagore Hall, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), New Delhi.

The training programme is being jointly organised by Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, JMI and Rotary Education Foundation, Rotary International District 3010 with a view to facilitate research and identification of the core issues underlying conflicts of different shades and intensity witnessed in different parts of the country.

The training programme is being participated by selected delegates from conflict ridden States of Jammu & Kashmir, Chhatishgarh and Manipur.

Ningsen Worngam, CO 3rd IRB, Deben Sharma of People's Dialogue Initiative and Laishram Churchil of The Sangai Express are participating in the programme.

Prof Tasneem Meenai, Officiating Director, Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution, JMI opened the training programme by presenting an introductory speech about the training programme.

She said that the programme would focus on mapping conflicts and its dynamics in the North East region, the States affected by Naxalism and Kashmir.

In his inaugural speech, JMI Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung observed that governance in North Eastern States and Naxal affected areas is exceptionally poor.

Addressing the inaugural session as chief guest, Shushil Gupta, Padma Shri and Past Director, Rotary International opined that primary cause of the many conflict besetting the country is not a law and order problem but development problems or lack of it.

He said that the road to war is a super highway whereas road to peace is like groping in wilderness.

The inaugural session culminated with the vote of thanks presented by Atul Dev, Project Coordinator, Rotary Education Foundation.

The post-lunch session featured an introductory lecture by Dr Kaushikee, Assistant Professor, Nelson Mandela Centre for Peace and Conflict Resolution.

Significantly, the training programme includes a field study trip to Manipur from December 12 to December 19, 2012 during which the delegates would visit different places of Manipur and interact with all stakeholders of the kinds of conflict witnessed in Manipur.
