DM College to become State University soon: Okendro

DM College, Imphal is going to be upgraded as a State University soon under Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme and Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Zubin Irani is likely to lay the foundation stone for the proposed higher educational institute.
This was officially announced by Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro while inaugurating the newly upgraded Government Moirang Purel High School at Moirang Purel in Imphal East district on Wednesday.
Participating as chief guest of the inaugural function, Minister Okendro pointed out that the lone Manipur University (MU) is not capable of taking in all students in the State for pursuing higher studies.

To address this problem, the Central Government has already given approval to the State Government for setting up of a Rajiv Gandhi National University (RGNU) at the present DM College, Imphal.
DM College, Imphal is among 200 State Universities to be established across the country under RUSA, the Minister disclosed, adding the State Government is all prepared to set up the private sector RGNU soon for Manipur.
Union HRD Minister Smriti Zubin Irani has been urged to help in construction of the proposed University at the earliest, Minister Okendro said, while adding that Irani has also promised to visit Manipur and lay the foundation stone for the State University.
Minister Okendro further informed that plans are also afoot to establish B Ed Colleges and Government Polytechnic Institutes in every district of the State.
He was positive that Manipur will become a self-reliant State in education sector if the results of all the plans and policies taken up by the State Government turn out to be fruitful.
He also mentioned that as many as 125 Government schools in the State have already been upgraded to the status of High Schools and a total of 800 Primary teachers have been promoted to Graduate teachers.
Admitting that there are still shortages of regular Headmasters in High Schools and regular Principals in Higher Secondary Schools besides requirement of more ZEOs, AIs and DIs in the State, the Education Minister further disclosed that the Government is planning to recruit fresh candidates for filling up these posts soon.
At the function, MLA Th Shymakumar and Director of Education (S) H Deleep shared the dais along with Minister Okendro.
