Sea Cherry can-fish found off the mark

Deputy Food Safety Commissioner, Directorate of Health Service, Tekcham Brojendro Khaba has alerted consumers to check the authenticity of any packaged foods specially can-fish before purchasing.
Showing around 60-70 Sea Cherry can-fish containers that were seized from a store at Imphal West's Nongmeibung area on Friday evening, Brojendro Khaba said the 450 Grams Sea Cherry can-fish products of Rs 95 being sold in the market are not in conformity to the standards prescribed under 'Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011' .
Alerting consumers to be cautious while purchasing any packaged food items, the Deputy Food Safety Commissioner explained that as per the regulations, it should be packed in hermetically sealed in clean and sound containers.
The containers should be free from rusting and mechanical defects and the final products should be free from foreign materials or objectionable flavour/odour.
Moreover, the packaging and labeling of the containers should be prepared in such a way not to separate from the main container and in each packaged foods the batch identification numbers and particular color of the logo of the product should be there, Brojendro Khaba said.
Furthermore, he informed that the State Food Safety Department would be sending the seized can-fish products made by Sowkar Canning Company, Udayawara, Karnataka to a notified microbiological testing center in Kolkata, West Bengal to find out possible adulterants in them, and accordingly the officials concerned of the manufacturing company would be summoned for further investigation and necessary actions.
Brojendro Khaba said that consumers can report to any of the Food Safety Designated officer or supervisors posted across the State in case of any complaint related to packaged and unpackaged food items.
