Bandh supporters torch truck

Suspected bandh supporters burned down one iron-loaded truck near Keithelmanbi cemetery along Imphal-Dimapur road Thursday night at around 9:30 .
Sources said a little known armed outfit has imposed a 48-hour total chakka bandh along two National Highways�Imphal-Dimapur road and Imphal-Jiribam road from 6 pm of September 3 till 6 pm of September 5�to protest against the three bills passed in the State Assembly on August 31 .
United Naga Council (UNC) has also called a 48-hour parallel bandh from midnight of September 3 in hill districts of the State.
A reliable source informed that suspected volunteers of the outfit shot and punctured tyres of some passenger Winger vans along the highway at around 9:15 pm but the vehicles managed to escape.
But one iron-loaded truck bearing registration number NL-05D 8917 which was heading towards Imphal side from Satyam Industries Taphou was torched by suspected bandh supporters near Keithelmanbi (Champhai) cemetery at around 9:30 pm.
It is believed the truck was set afire by armed cadres after some bullets hit on the oil tank, sources said.
However, personnel of Kangpokpi Police Station on receiving information of the incident rushed to the spot along with fire tenders and extinguished the flame.
But the front portion of the vehicle had been completely damaged by the fire.
CHANDEL: The first day of 48-hour bandh called by United Naga Council (UNC) passed off peacefully without any untoward incidents in Chandel District.
The bandh however paralyzed movement of passenger and goods carrying vehicles plying along sections of National Highway (NH) - 102-C (Pallel- Chandel) and NH-102 (Pallel- Moreh) as bandh enforcers blocked stretches of the highways at Tengnoupal, Lamkang Khunou, Liwa Changning, Chandel DC and Panchai junctions.
DI and Sumo services along Chandel�Chakjpikarong via Sugnu were also suspended during the bandh.
Mini Secretariat at the DC Office Complex wore a deserted look due to the bandh.
Police and security personnel were seen on the roads keeping strict vigil so that no untoward incidents could take place.
Shops in Japhou Bazar and schools were not affected.
There was no report of any untoward incident till the time of filing this report.
