Orgns adopt resolution on 'development injustice'

Mapithel Dam Affected Villagers Organisation, Centre for Research and Advocacy, Manipur and All Loktak Lake Areas Fishermen Union on Friday adopted several resolutions related to "development over land and resources" .
The resolutions were adopted at a consultation meet on "Development Injustice & Sustainable Goals in Manipur" organised by the three bodies at Nupi Lal Complex, Imphal.
At the meeting, the organisations expressed concern with the pattern of development injustice in Manipur and human rights violations that antagonize the intrinsic relationship of indigenous peoples over their land and resources.
Expressing concern with the blocking of Thoubal River and the inconvenience and harassment meted to both upstream and downstream villagers, the meeting resolved that ask the authorities to release waters of Mapithel dam and to let the Thoubal River Flow Free.
It has asked to consider the plights and concerns of downstream affected communities in consultation with them, including to ensure their safety and rehabilitation and resettlement.
On the formulation of policies that will lead to damming up of all Rivers of Manipur under the Manipur Hydro Power Policy 2012, the meeting asked the authorities to review all failed and under-performing dams in Manipur - such as the Khoupum Dam, Khuga Dam and Singda Dam etc for their compliance with Indigenous peoples rights and recommendations of the World Commission on, Dams, 2000.The meeting also resolved to end all forms of forced land grabbing in Manipur such as for construction of National Sports University at Yaithibi Loukon.
