Discussion on drug and violence held

A one-day discussion on "Drug & Violence Against Women and Children in Manipur" was jointly organized by Kanglasha Hiranmei Lup, YPA and Women Action for Development (WAD) at Ema Haoreibi Sambubee Community Hall, Hiranmei on October 13 last.
The program was attended by Dr Dhanabir Laishram - Social Scientist; Sobita Mangsatabam - Secretary WAD; T Shadishkanta Secretary YFPHR and Elangbam Shanti, Pradhan Hiyanglam Gram Panchayat; Urikhimbam Kunjo, former Head Master of Langmeidong Hr Sec School; Mayengbam Rajendro, former Head Master of Wabagai High School as the presidium members, said a press note by WAD.
Around 200 locals including members of the Self-help groups also participated in the programme.
In his keynote speech, Yaishkul Ningthoujam, Social Worker highlighted various issues faced by the people of Hiranmei village like issues of drug abuse, child marriage in most of the households and he expressed his desire to discuss thoroughly on this issue.
T Shadishkanta, Secretary, YFPHR spoke on basic legal rights such as POCSO Act & Child Marriage Prohibition Act.
He said that all citizens should be aware of basic legal knowledge and mechanisms for speedy delivery of justice.
He further appealed to the participants not to encourage child marriage and urged all to report immediately to Child helpline no.1098 .
Sobita Mangsatabam, Secretary, WAD spoke on the topic "Gender & Gender based violence".
She asserted that there is a need for a practical solution to handle crime against women and a change or improvement in the justice delivery system, active participation of the victims, a need for proper forensic science laboratory and DNA testing machine in the State.
Dr Dhanabir Laishram said that in order to tackle violence against women and children and to bring in a developed society, one need to understand the contribution made by the other and to bring up the children in a cool and calm environment, in which both the parents need to share equal responsibility in the family with understanding.
Pradhan of Hiyanglam Gram Panchayat, E Shanti has expressed gratitude to the organiser and resource person for imparting knowledge on crime against women and children.
