Manipur is a transit route for drugs from the infamous Golden Triangle and many drugs consignments originating from Manipur have been seized while being smuggled to other parts of the country in the neighbouring States of Assam, Nagaland and even Meghalaya.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his recent visit to Assam had expressed deep concern over the growing drug menace in the region.
Addressing the Chief Ministers, Chief Secretaries and Director Generals of Police of the North Eastern States on October 9 on 'Drug Trafficking and National Security' at Guwahati, the Union Home Minister had stated, 'Drug syndicates exploit bank accounts and postal addresses belonging to North East India.
Myanmar citizens have bank accounts in some Indian banks in Manipur.
Drug smugglers from the North East are also in collusion with Nigerians.
The suspected involvement of South Indians living in the North East in drug smuggling has also been observed," Shah had said.
