A Chinese Pangolin (Scientific name - Manis pentadactyla) was rescued by Waikhom Sunil Singh of Loitang Khullen Awang Leikai yesterday and has handed over the animal to Unique Wildlife Protection Committee (UWLPC) Manipur.
A statement by UWLPC has informed that the rescued Chinese Pangolin is being treated at the Veterinary Hospital of Manipur Zoological Garden since it was found to be weak.
Once the animal is recovered fully and is deemed fit, it will be freed in a safe place which can be its habitat.
Advisor of the committee, Dr Kh Shamungou Singh stated that the Chinese Pangolin is a protected animal species under the Schedule-I of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 .
Locally it is known as 'Shafu', 'kakcheng Chabi' and 'Shamarak-Ngamarak', he added.
He maintained that the population of Chinese Pangolin has reduced considerably in the State owing to the illegal trade of the animal considering that it is used for medicinal purposes in China and Vietnam.
Lastly he cautioned that if anyone is found to be dealing in illegal trade of the animal, then he/she is liable for legal punishments under Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, added the release.
