The diamond Jubilee celebration of the Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur cum the 20th general conference of the All Zeliangrong Students' Union, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland held from March 3 at Maha Kabui Namching village on National Highway 53 in Senapati district will conclude tomorrow.
As part of the 20th general conference of the AZSU, an eight member executive body of the union was elected today for the year 2010-11.John Tungenlung and Nachaheing Kompong have been elected president and general secretary respectively.
On the third day today, YAS and IFCD Minister, N Biren was the chief guest and Tamei A/C MLA, Awangbou Newmai presided.
Addressing the gathering, Minister N Biren said that the role taken by the Zeliangrong people in the struggle to free Manipur from colonial clutch of the Brirish empire was remarkable.
Recognising the valiant sacrifice made by Haipou Jadonang, a brave man of the Zeliangrong community for Manipur, the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government has established the Haipou Jadonang park, Minister Biren said.
He further said that one of the major tribes settled in Manipur, the Zeliangrong community has been rendering a major contribution towards maintaining Manipur's integrity.
He appealed to the Zeliangrong people to take more roles in maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood among all the communities living in Manipur.
He also advised the student community to pay more attention to academic activities than politics.
The mega event started on March 3.Education Minister Jayentakumar was the chief guest, vice chairman of Hill Areas Committee, MLA Khangthuanang Panmei was the president and TD Minister DD Thaisii and MLA Haokholet Kipgen were the guests of honour at the inaugural function.
Miniser Jayentakumar unveiled the diamond jubilee monument stone and released a souvenir on the occasion.
