Governor Gurbachan Jagat, along with Lady Governor Kiran Jagat visited three vegetable farms in Wangoi area of Imphal West district today.
According to a press release issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor was accompanied by Secretary to Governor Dr RK Nimai, Commissioner (Horticulture) K Moses Chalai and Technology Mission Manipur in-charge Kh Ratan.
The Governor and his team first visited farms at Wangoi Thoudam Leikai where P Manaobi, A Sanahal and L Dinamani have been cultivating crops like cabbage, cauliflower, onion, pea etc.
Interacting with the progressive farmers, the Governor asked about their net income, problems and other related matters.
In reply, the Governor was informed about the problem of water shortage being faced by the farmers.
While appreciating their efforts, Governor Gurbachan Jagat exhorted the farmers to take up multiple cropping in order to raise their and the State's economy and try to integrate their farms with poultry and cattle farms.
Moses Chalai said that the State Government is considering to provide a sprinkler set per acre to the farmers so as to make up water shortage.
He appraised the Governor that 1500 farmers are given subsidies in kind every year.
P Manaobi (65) of Wangoi Thoudam Leikai has been cultivating crops like cabbage, cauliflower, onion, pea etc in 1.5 hectares for about 10 years.
The seeds were provided by the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation.
He has also been provided with one diesel water-pump set, UV films and one community tank with organic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicide with sprayers from Technology Mission, Manipur.
A Sanahal (40) of the same locality has been growing both winter and summer vegetables in two hectares for the last four years.
This season, he is cultivating only pea.
A master degree in Mathematics, Sanahal cultivates three crops in a year.
He has been provided UV films, organic fertilizers, pesticides, fungicide, bee boxes, sprayers etc besides vegetable seeds from time to time.
Longjam Dinamani of the same locality is now cultivating cabbage and pea in 1.25 acres with the subsidy from the Technology Mission, Manipur, added the release.
