Imphal, August 09 2015 :
Thousands of hectares of paddy fields located at Phayeng and adjoining areas are facing acute water shortage.
The problem has been exacerbated after pick-up wares built in the area were washed away in the recent flood.
Pick-up wares built over Ipaklok canal were washed away twice in 2013 and 2014 causing water shortage in the nearby field.
Recently this year, the pick-up ware built over Maklang river by the Minor Irrigation Department was also carried away by strong currents of water heightening the shortage.
Some fields have even developed cracks as no water has been supplied to the fields.
Phayeng gram panchayat pradhan Angom Gojendro today inspected the area where the pick-up wares were installed.
The pick-up ware built at Phayeng Kharang Khunou has been irrigating about 1500 paris of paddy fields located at Phayeng, Lairenkabi, Sanjenbam and Heibongpokpi for the last 12 years.
The ware was repaired under the supervision of Angom Gojendro in 2014 before it was washed away completely in the recent flood, an executive of farmers' body of the area stated.
The water retained in the pick-up ware was not only used for irrigation but also for consumption and other daily uses by the people.
He further appealed to the authorities concerned to build a new pick-up ware in the area.
Meanwhile, Phayeng gram panchayat pradhan during his inspection drive to Ipaklok, said the canal, also known as Tapila Ethei, provides water for irrigation to about 3000 paris.
He further conveyed a desire to build a new pick-up ware or a mini dam over Maklang river soon.
