Landslides hit Tamenglong District

Tamenglong, August 09 2015 :
Due to incessant rains in the last many days, several parts of Tamenglong District have been hit by landslides.
Many residential houses and shops have been reportedly damaged by landslides in Noney Market area.
Drains in Noney Town were overflowing and surrounding paddy fields have been damaged by mud and slush from the landslides along with standing crops.
It has also been reported that there were number of spots along the Imphal-Tamenglong Highway severely affected by landslips.
Meanwhile, the Village Chiefs Association, Tamenglong (VCAT) District has fervently appealed the State Government to take immediate measures and mitigate the plight of the people of the District who had been reeling under the impact of incessant rains in the last 10 to 15 days.
In a press statement, VCAT President Karamphui said that heavy rainfall in the district has caused havoc resulting into several landslides and floods in many areas.
According to conservative estimate, crops worth Rs 10 to 20 crore have been destroyed.
Landslides have been reported in Tousem, Tamei, Tamenglong, Nungba and Khoupum Sub Divisions.
VCAT stated that the overflowing Khoupum dam has caused immense hardship to the people inhabiting nearby.
The association further appealed all the responsible authorities to take up immediate measures so as to mitigate of the plight of the people of the Tamenglong District.
