Imphal, August 23 2026:
Residents of Sagolband Tera Loukrakpam Leikai today staged a sit-in protest at the Neinasang Club community hall demanding that the NRC be updated before conducting Census in the State.
The protest was organised by Neinasang Club and local Meira Paibis.
Speaking to media, Sagolband Tera Loukrakpam Leikai Meira Paibi secretary M Pumimashi said the protest was held in support of the campaign launched by the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) for updating NRC before Census in Manipur.
Clubs and Meira Paibis from across the area have extended full support to the movement, she added.
Pumimashi said the Government should implement the people's demand to update NRC first and then conduct Census as an official exercise.
If the demand is not honoured, the situation could escalate, she warned.
Conducting Census without updating NRC would be tantamount to the Government officially allowing outsiders to settle openly in Manipur, she said, reiterating the demand for NRC first and Census later.
After the sit-in, the protesters marched to the residence of Patsoi AC MLA S Kunjakeswor and submitted a memorandum reiterating the demand to update NRC first, followed by Census.
