Imphal, August 23 2026:
Torch rallies were held in different parts of the State demanding the updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the commencement of the census exercise.
The rallies were organised under the aegis of the Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) at Thangmeiband, Lalambung, Lamphel, Kwakeithel, Keishamthong, Kongba, Tentha and other areas.
The common issues raised during the rallies included the fact that thousands of displaced people continue to remain in relief camps.

The protesters also said that several unauthorised villages have emerged in the hill districts, mostly inhabited by Kukis, and raised concerns over the alleged influx of illegal immigrants.
Considering these factors, they said that conducting the census without first resolving these issues would be unacceptable.
They urged the MLAs to mount pressure on the Central leadership to ensure that the NRC is updated before the Census.
