4 held for assaulting couple

Imphal, December 01 2018: Imphal West district police arrested four individuals for physically assaulting a couple and molesting the woman on November 27, in a jungle of Iroishemba hills after forcefully detaining the couple.

Speaking to media persons at SP Imphal West conference hall today, SP (Imphal West) Jogeshchandra Haobijam said that on November 29, at around 10.30 pm, the male victim of the case lodged a complaint to women PS, Imphal West, stating that on November 27, at around 2 pm, when he and his wife were returning from Iroishemba Zoo towards Langol National Game Village, they were waylaid and forcibly stopped on the way by four unidentified miscreants.

After detaining them for some time, they were taken to the top of Iroishemba hill into the jungle and the four individuals physically assaulted them apart from robbing them of their mobile phones and other valuables.

The complainant further mentioned that while he was beaten, mocked and made fun of, his wife was dragged away, stripped of her clothes and molested by the unidentified miscreants who also took video clippings of all that transpired.

The complainant continued that they were asked to kiss each other by the unidentified miscreants and they took pictures of the act.

After the ordeal was over, the complainant claimed that the miscreants forced them to call their parents and also to ask their parents to bring Rs 10,000 as ransom for their safe release and hence a case was registered at women PS, Imphal West, the SP added.

Jogeshchandra informed that during the course of investigation, acting on reliable information about the presence of three suspected persons in Lamdeng Makha Leikai area, a team of Imphal West police under his supervision and led by Women Inspector Meisnam Ronita(OC, Women PS, Imphal West) along with Imphal West commando personnel, rushed to the area and arrested three individuals who were identified as Laiphrakpam Romananda(31) s/o Takhellei, Khundrakpam Jayentakumar (22) s/o Dhananjoy and Heirangkhongjam Sachinkumar (all from Lamdeng Makha Leikai).

The SP explained that all three were produced before the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West I and remanded into police custody till December 5.Later on, as a follow up action, one more individual identified as Chingangbam Chittaranjan (28) s/o Joy of Lamdeng Mayai Leikai was arrested by women police today, the SP added.

During the course of investigation, the accused individuals admitted to the charges levelled against them and one of the accused, Laiphrakpam Romananda admitted that he had forced the victim girl to pull up her shirt and skirt and to show them her private parts.

He also admitted that he took the victim girl away from the others and molested her apart from taking indecent photographs of the girl.

Jogeshchandra conveyed that police also seized five mobile handsets along with sim cards and three memory cards from the accused persons and further investigation is on to take up necessary legal actions against the accused individuals according to the law of the land.

He further said that district police have got information about such incidents in the surrounding area of Iroishemba Zoo and appealed all not to carry out such acts in the future.

The SP also appealed to the public not to feel insecure while going near Iroishemba Zoo area.
