Imphal, November 15 2014 :
Expressing strong dissent against the State Government's order to evict street vendors in and around the spaces between the three Ima markets and temporary markets and also the marking of these areas as parking zones, the Roadside Vendor's Welfare Association has demanded legalisation of the stated areas as vending zone for street vendors before December 12 .
A discussion session for street vendors on the theme 'eviction is not the solution for street vendors' was held today at GM hall where the stated demand was drafted.
The session unanimously resolved to demand the State Government, as per Supreme Court's order, to adopt steps for the welfare of street vendors, and declare the free spaces above the three Ima markets and the northern side of temporary market as 'Vending Zone' before December 12 .
The session also decided to demand constitution of a vending committee to render services for the development of street vendors, to single out street vendors from among the vendors inside Ima market and provide the same with identity cards and also end violence against street vendors of the stated areas.
Blaming the overcrowding of Khwairamband market to the lack of proper parking system, participants in the discussion session today said the State Government must select suitable parking areas if it plans to control the overcrowding in the said market area.
The vendors expressing disappointment over the State Government's indifference towards the condition of the roadside vendors, also called for recognition during the discussion session today.
