The 8th Tamchon Memorial Football Tournament will begin from November 18 at Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki will inaugurate the opening ceremony with Commissioner of Delhi Police BS Bassi as guest of honour.
Announcing the event at press club today, Tamchon Memorial Committee members Ngarami Shimray, Col VK Sood, Dr Yarunggam AS, Yaoreiphy Horam and Kharingpam told media persons that the tournament has received tremendous responses from the youth of the North East States.
Recounting the earlier edition of the tourney, they said that the stadium was packed not only with people from the region but also from the mainland.
Initiated in 2007, in memory of (L) RN Tamchon, the then ACP Delhi police, in his memory, Delhi based Tangkhul Naga Society initiated the football tournament, under the theme of unity, friendship, understanding and sportsmanship.
The platform serves as a space for different groups and community to come together.
It is also aimed to bring the people from North East India and mainland closer.
Sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and NEC, the tournament is also supported by ONGC, COSCO and Oil India Limited.
The team champion will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh while the runners up team will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 3 lakh.
The quarter finalists will receive a cash prize of Rs 25,000 each as consolation prizes.
Hmar FC (Manipur) will play Hornbill United FC (Nagaland) in the opening match on November 18 .
