Imphal, November 15 2014 :
Concerned over the burgeoning crimes against women and children in Manipur, Child Rights Activist Keisam Pradipkumar has proposed for establishing a gender equitable society in the state with quality education, just governance, proper use of social media, revocation of AFSPA, and regulation of illegal restauras in Manipur.
Speedy trial and deterrent punishment should be provided to the perpetrators of such crimes, he opined.
In an exclusive interview with this Daily, Pradipkumar stated that 'as the military conflict is decreasing nowadays with cease-fire and suspension of operations dominating the conflict spectrum, the armed people have resorted to target softer or weaker sex and age groups' .
He said that factors influencing the social environment to cause unabated sexual assault against children in the society are due to prolonged imposition of AFSPA, conflict between the armed state and non state actors, and keeping the male folks suppressed under military might.
Crimes against women and children may be attributed to the vulnerable environment created by opening of large number of dark restaurants facilitating sexual acts by charging wholesome money from the customers, Pradipkumar exhorted, while adding that easy money making enterprises and easy livelihood devoid of morale, legal and ethical values in society are a conducive atmosphere for criminal mindsets.
Blaming the IT technology without progressive channel for utilization, he said that sex has become an alternative amusement for many juveniles and adults.
Early experiment into sexuality has become so common among the teenagers that it has led to broken wedlock, murders and suicides of young brides etc.
Our education and social structure is not so modern to cope with the upcoming modern social challenges such as sexual assaults, economic deprivation because of urbanization, globlisation and unfair industrialization, he opined.
