Imphal, April 29 2019:
At least seven houses have been reduced to cinders in a major fire which broke out yesterday at around 10.30 pm at Phungyar headquarters, sources in Manipur Fire Service said.
Fire tenders from Ukhrul Fire Service Sub-station claimed that it took around four hours and 30 minutes to control the fire.
Fire tenders could reach the spot only at around 11.30 pm and most of the properties had been already destroyed by the inferno by then.
Meanwhile, local people claimed that the inferno was ignited by a cyclone which swept the area at around 10.30 pm.
The village authorities further said that inferno broke out at the residence of one Ngaithingkhui (Headman of Chingshou Village) residing at Phungyar headquarters.
They also said that the raging fire quickly engulfed all the surrounding structures and it went out of control even as the villagers of Phungyar headquarters and its surrounding villages struggled hard to control and contain the fire.
Claiming that the inferno had ravaged many houses and properties worth around Rs 25 lakh, village authorities of Phungyar headquarters and surrounding areas informed that a memorandum appealing for compensation for the colossal damage would be submitted to the State Government at the earliest.
