Imphal, July 29 2026:
The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (CJFD) has questioned the Government's unwillingness to identify illegal immigrants before going ahead with census operations.
Reiterating that any census operation in Manipur should be preceded by updation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), a protest demonstration was staged today at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai here under the aegis of CJFD .
Speaking to media persons, CJFD convenor Jee- tendra Ningomba asserted that illegal immigrants are responsible for all the unrest and issues plaguing Manipur at present.

He questioned the Government's opposition to the people's demand for identification of illegal immigrants and updation of NRC before proceeding with census operations.
Urging the State Government to make a public announcement by August 6 that the NRC will be updated before carrying out census operations, the CJFD convenor warned that Manipur will witness a mass agitation of unprecedented scale if the Government fails to make the announcement.
The people's demand is basically about identifying genuine citizens of India and the only way to identify the genuine citizens is updating the NRC, he asserted.
If the Government views the people's demand as legitimate, the NRC should be updated without fail.
In case, the Government thinks the same demand is illegitimate, the Government should come out with a convincing explanation, Jeetendra said.
H asked if it is not the Govt's responsibility to ensure the security and safety of its citizens.
He went on to ask why the Government is not taking any concrete action against those elements disturbing peace and normalcy in the State.
Denouncing the Government's silence on the popular demand for updating the NRC before conducting census operations, Jeetendra said that the CSOs have been working for the future of Manipur.
He asserted that it would be prudent for the State Government and the Central Government to consult with the RGI to update the NRC before launching census operations in Manipur.
The protesters used placards which read "No IDP settlement, no census", "Update NRC before census", "No NRC, No Census" etc .
