Imphal, June 24 2022:
Loktak Development Authority (LDA) chairman, Moirangthem Asnikumar Singh has categorically stated that a holistic approach with proper involvement of local communities is vital for the conservation of the wetlands.
He made the statement on the sidelines of a field visit to three important wetland complexes under Kakching and Thoubal districts namely Ekop, Lousi and Kharung Pat on Friday.
The LDA chairman was accompanied by Dr U Deben Singh, MLA Wabgai AC; senior officials of LDA and local community leaders.
The team thoroughly assessed the physical status of these wetlands which are closely associated with Loktak Lake and found the current condition of these sites deplorable and a genuine cause of concern for all the stakeholders.
M Asnikumar Singh alleged that the wetlands have been deteriorating rapidly due to the short-sightedness of decision/policymakers in the past.
He continued that LDA officials and wetland experts have already visited these sites recently to gauge the condition of the wetlands.
The LDA chairman informed that after consultation with stakeholders and local community, it was decided to conduct a detailed survey of these sites to formulate a plan to conserve the wetlands.
"We firmly believe that under the guidance and leadership of our People's Chief Minister N Biren Singh, our conservation mission will succeed in preserving the wetlands", he asserted.
M Asnikumar Singh further thanked Dr U Deben Singh for his concern and support towards the cause.
