MM Ahmad selected for Sahitya Akademi award

MM Ahmad, one of the leading writers from among Meetei Pangal community, has been selected for Sahitya Akademi Prize for Translation 2021 for his Manipuri translation of Umrao Jaan, an Urdu novel written by Mirza Muhammad Ruswa.
He has also become the first Meetei Pangal writer to win Sahitya Akademi award.
His name was among winners of translation prizes selected for 22 different Indian languages announced by Sahitya Akademi on Friday.
Each language had a three-member committee to shortlist the winners.
MM Ahmad was born to Muhamuddin alias Haoba and Kusum Bibi alias Chaobi Bibi on December 31, 1953 in Singerbond village, Cachar district, Assam.
His family shifted to Chingdong Leikai in Jiribam when he was three years old.
He completed BA LLB under Gauhati University and became a profession al lawyer by registering in Gauhati Bar Council in 1980.As a translator, he had remained as member of Manipur State Kala Akademi general council for two terms.
He had also been a member of WAQF Board from 2009 to 2014.He is not only a life member of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad but also served as joint secretary for three terms, general secretary of Writers' Union Manipur from 2003 to 2009, and member of the festival committee of the first and second editions of Festival of Literature organised by Manipur State Kala Akademi.
