Imphal, May 20 2023:
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga's call for 'unification of Zo areas' is a direct challenge to the unity and integrity of Manipur.
The statement made by the CM of a neighbouring State was "unfortunate and irresponsible", said Janata Dal (United) .
The Janata Dal (United) was reacting to a statement reportedly made by Mizoram CM Zoramthanga, who is also the president of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) during a meeting of the party yesterday.
During the meeting, the MNF chief had reportedly said that while any State Government cannot directly interfere in the internal affairs of a State like Manipur, the unification of all the contiguous areas inhabited by Zo tribes has been one of the main objectives of the founding leaders of the party.
Meanwhile, at the office of the Janata Dal (United) in Imphal, the party's State unit president Kshetrimayum Biren said the statement made by Zoramthanga was uncalled for and irresponsible of a head of a State, especially during this time when Manipur is facing a volatile situation.
Ksh Biren further alleged that the meeting chaired by the Mizoram CM was also attended by one of the Kuki-Chin MLAs of Manipur.
While the alleged call for unification of Zo areas, will have no reality, the Janata Dal (United) strongly condemns Zoramthanga's 'irresponsible' statement, said Ksh Biren.
He also accused the State Government, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies of remaining silent on the present situation and not taking any counter measures against the 10 MLAs who had recently demanded a separate administration for Kuki-Chin people to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.
Why has the BJP not taken any action against 7 of its MLAs ? asked Ksh Biren further accusing the State Government of not making its stand known to the people of the State on the present issue.
Janata Dal (United) Manipur National council member and the party's chief spokesperson, Dr Nimaichand Luwang said the State is facing a very serious crisis and the party had earlier approached Governor Anusuiya Uikey appealing to her to implement all necessary measures to restore normalcy and bring peace.
Speaking to media persons, Dr Nimaichand Luwang condemned Mizoram CM's reported call for "unification of Zo areas"
and said the call has the potential to disintegrate the unity of the whole of the North East and invite chaos.
The violent clashes between two communities that erupted on May 3 have taken many lives, destroyed houses and displaced thousands of people.
Many are still missing.
All the people, the victims and families of those killed in the violent clashes are still suffering and mourning their losses.
The Mizoram CM's "irresponsible" statement at such a time may have added fuel to their anger, Dr Nimaichand Luwang said strongly condemning the statement.
Stating that all the State Government's machinery have failed to swiftly contain the crisis and restore normalcy and peace, Dr Nimaichand Luwang asserted that the people have lost trust in the Government.
He then lamented that the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and other Union Ministers are silent on the crisis and not one of them has visited Manipur since the clashes erupted on May 3 .
While urging the Centre to take concrete and visible action to solve the crisis, Dr Nimaichand Luwang stated that a special Session of the Assembly must be convened on the present situation and the resolutions and recommendations decided during the Session should be apprised to the Centre for immediate actions.
There should also be a high level enquiry commission inducted to investigate the source of the conflict and nail the responsible parties.
While concrete steps are needed to be taken up to protect lives and properties of the people, a peace process should begin urgently.
The Janata Dal (United) is inviting the 10 Kuki-Chin MLAs and all responsible Kuki leaders for talks to bring lasting peace, he said, urging the 10 MLAs to recon-sider the demand they raised in the interest of the public andto bring peace.
The Janata Dal (United) is holding an all political party meeting on May 27 aimed at resolving the crisis, Dr Nimaichand Luwang informed, inviting all leaders of different political parties to attend the meeting.
Meanwhile, the people at all relief camps across districts should be provided all the basic amenities and care, he added .
Janata Dal (United) National Council member Samuel-Jendai, party's State senior vice presidents Dr Khwairakpam Loken, O Nabakishore and other leaders were present in the press meet.
