Special care for infants, 'women' stressed

Economic and Re-source Development Or-ganisation (ERDO) has urged the state government to provide special care for infants, lactating mothers and pregnant women, who are taking shelter in differ-ent relief camps after they were displaced due to the communal riots.
Addressing a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday, ERDO gener-al secretary N Shanta said that there are 151 pregnant women, 103 lactating wom-en, and 1406 children in the age group of 0-6 years and 6014 in the age group of 7-18 years at 192 relief camps set up in seven districts as per its survey.
He then urged the government to conduct a proper survey in all the affected districts to ascertain the figures and provide nec-essary care and assistance at the earliest.
While thanking social welfare department for its efforts in extending sup-port and care to pregnant & breastfeeding lactating women as well as infants, the general secretary urged the department to provide fur-ther assistance such as toys to children of up to 6 years in order to distract their young minds from the impact of the crisis at least to some extent.
He also urged for providing proper counselling service to children from 7 to 18 years, and appealed to the public to include inner wear and san-itary pads for the displaced people while extending relief materials to the camp.
