Imphal, June 03 2022:
The Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) has highlighted the poor condition of Imphal-Jiri road and questioned why the central and State government have failed to repair this lifeline of the State.
In a statement, PPCM has stressed on the importance of roadways in a state like Manipur where other modes of transport such as waterways and airways are not as relevant.
When it is inconvenient to ply along Imphal-Dimapur road due to landslides or any other reason, Imphal-Jiri road is used by truck drivers to bring essential commodities into the state, the statement added.
However, due to the collapse of Irang bridge resulting from recent torrential rains, people have resorted to taking the Old Cachar road to reach the National highway.
The statement also mentioned the deplorable condition of roads when taking this route and added that a lack of proper drainage system has exacerbated an already big issue.
PPCM also lashed out at National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) calling it incompetent and slow in carrying out their job.
As such, PPCM has appealed to the State administration to instruct the relevant company and department to take appropriate measures to address this important issue at the earliest.
