Imphal, October 12 2023:
Addressing the widespread death of pigs in some areas of the State due to a mysterious disease recently, the Manipur Progressive Piggery Farmers Association (MAPPFA) has urged the State Veterinary Department to take steps to address the issue.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club yesterday, L Bidyasagar, joint secretary, MAPPFA shared that due to a spike in swine diseases and deaths between 2018 an 2022, samples of diseased pigs were sent to a veterinary hospital for testing which revealed that the pigs were infected with African Swine Flu.
As a preventative measure against the disease, widespread disinfection drives were carried out in the State then, he recalled.
At that time, MAPPFA had submitted a memorandum to relevant officials of the Veterinary Department to provide compensation to the piggery farmers affected by the outbreak but received no response, he rued.
Piggery farming has largely proven to be a financially rewarding venture for many farmers.
However, the outbreak of an unknown disease among pigs in the State will be very detrimental to the livelihood of piggery farmers if the Veterinary Department does not take immediate and stringent measures to address it, he said.
