Imphal, June 28 2023:
The Meghalaya Manipuri Welfare Society (MMWS) has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to restore normalcy and peace in Manipur and protect her integrity.
Highlighting 10 charter of demands to bring about stability and harmony in the State, the memorandum stressed that the "silence" of the PM on the crisis is worrying and "really hurts" the sentiments of the people of the North East.
Stating it believes that the dynamic leadership of the PM can restore normalcy, the MMWS pointed out that the tragic violent conflict between sections of the Chin-Kuki people and the Meteis began with the Tribal Solidarity March on May 3.Though claimed to be peaceful, the rally became "uncontrollably violent", it added.
The violence has killed many and displaced thousands of people, said the society urging the Centre to implement rehabilitation measures and facilitate the return of displaced people to their original places.
Initiate measures to promote and enhance the age-old bond of emotional unity and integrity.
Ensure protection of Manipur's integrity and territorial boundaries, it said to the PM.
Implement strict control measures on print, electronic and social media platforms to prevent the spread of rumours, hatred and biased reporting, it said.
It urged the Centre to prevent appropriation of abandoned properties both in the hills and the valley and initiate immediate opening of National Highways.
Implement National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur as planned with other parts of India.
Safeguard the reserved and protected forests and wetlands of the State with strict enforcement of the laws and Acts, it said.
