Imphal, June 28 2023:
The Assam Rifles, in addition to the general public, has been preventing Manipur police commandos from entering Moreh' town since outbreak of ethnic violence on May 3 .
Consequently, the remaining personnel in the border town under Tengnoupal district are facing serious challenges, including shortage of drinking water.
Sources revealed that the highway connecting Moreh with the rest of the state has been cut off since the eruption of violence in early May.
This has resulted in blocking of supplies, including rations for the police and commando personnel.
Moreover, as many shops in Moreh town were set on fire the police personnel stationed in the border town are grappling with shortage of both food and drinking water.
While the personnel already stationed in Moreh are allowed leave or transfers, no new personnel are permitted to enter the town, with restrictions enforced by both the public and Assam Rifles.
In a recent incident, Assam Rifles only allowed two additional Assistant Superintendents of Police to enter, while restricting the others.
Previously, personnel were airlifted to Moreh every Wednesday and Friday, but this service was halted after objections raised by Kuki CSOs.
Despite repeated intimations to top officials in the home department about the situation, no steps have been taken to ensure free movement of state security fore -es within their own territory.
At present, the main gate of the commando complex in Moreh remains closed, and no personnel are permitted to leave.
As the commando personnel posted in the border town are technically confined to the complex in a hostage-like situation, they are experiencing severe shortage of food, drinking water, and other essential commodities.
They had also aired about the dire situation to the district administration, but no measures have been taken to alleviate their conditions, disclosed the sources.
