Imphal, August 31 2023:
Inmates of the temporary shelter homes constructed on the eastern side of Sajiwa Central Jail, Khabeisoi do not want construction of drains between fabricated houses but want attachment of iron nullah to the iron roof-sheets of the houses to drain the rain water properly.
The inmates also advocated plantation of trees around the complex so that they get fresh air and relief from the scorching heat.
Some inmates of the shelter homes told The People's Chronicle that little space available between rows of the temporary houses could be used as courtyard where children could play.
However, construction of drains between houses is continuing at present and this will create space crunch.
The little space available between houses could be kept intact if iron nullah is attached to roofs of the houses and rain water could be drained properly, the inmates explained, adding that keeping drain between houses will pollute the area.
They also quoted the contractor as confessing inability to drop the drain component as decision in this regard has to be taken by Manipur Police Housing Corporation.
As no tree is growing in the area, inmates are finding it hard to cope with the scorching heat even after putting on fan.
Accordingly, inmates want to plant sufficient trees around the temporary houses so that they get relieve from sunlight and heat and urged the forest department to provide saplings.
