Awareness programme on ASF conducted

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services organised a one-day state level awareness programme on 'Control, containment and eradication of African swine fever (ASF) & Information of National Livestock Mission-Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP)' on Wednesday.
Addressing farmers at the awareness programme, director (Vety and Animal Husbandry) Dr Ng Ibotombi said the recent African swine fever epidemic in the state amidst the ongoing violence severely affected farmers particularly those engaged in piggery.
The department alone could not prevent spread of African swine fever and required help and support from the people in preventing the contagious livestock disease.
There is no medicine for treatment of African swine fever but farmers need to check the disease by taking preventing measures, Dr Ibotombi said during the inaugural session of the awareness programme held at Veterinary complex, Sanjenthong.
Joint director (Vety and animal husbandry) Dr RK Khogendrajit, who also attended the inaugural session, said the department is giving special attention in piggery sector after pig population in .the.
state have decreased significantly in the recent African swine fever epidemic.
He also said that the role of farmers in piggery sector and media are very important in fighting the epidemic.
The awareness programme was attended by pig farmers from different parts of the state including Manipur Progressive Pig Farmers' Association president A Lokendro.
