State continues to record negative vehicle sales

Imphal, October 11 2023: As the humanitarian crisis is affecting all commercial sectors in the state, automobile retail sector continues to suffer as September 2023 recorded negative sales in all categories of motor vehicles as compared with sales figure of corresponding month last year.

According to a data released by Federation of Automobile Dealers' Associations (FADA), the overall sales figure for all types of vehicles dropped by -80.18 per cent (YoY) with September 2023 recording sales of 698 vehicles as compared to 3,522 vehicles in September 2022, against the all India increase of 20.36 per cent hike from September 2022 to September 2023 .

Figure of retail sales vary among the different categories.

In two-wheeler vehicle category, the state recorded sales'of 426 vehicles in September 2023 against 2,473 vehicles sold in September 2022, thereby showing a YoY decline of 82.77 per cent.

Only 13 three-wheeler vehicles were sold in September 2023 against 111 sold in September 2022, which shows a YoY decline of 88.29 per cent.

September 2023 recorded sales of 19 commercial vehicles against 116 units sold in September 2022, showing YoY decline of 83.62 per cent.

In passenger vehicle category, which include cars, September 2023 reported sales of 239 units against 821 units sold in September 2022, thereby showing a YoY decline of 70.89 per cent.

On the other hand, only one tractor was sold in September 2023 against one unit sold in September-2022 showing no change in YoY comparison.

The All India YoY changes from September 2022 to September 2023 are 21.68 per cent in two wheeler, 48.58 per cent in three wheeler, 4.87 per cent in commercial vehicles, 19.03 per cent in passenger vehicles, and -9.66 per cent in tractors.

The overall change is 20.36 per cent.

Commenting on how September 2023 performed, FADA Manipur State chairperson Andy Mangsatabam said, "the automobile industry in Manipur is one of the sectors that has been affected the most during this ongoing crisis.

We can only pray and hope for normalcy to return" .
