World Heart Day : Need for keeping heart healthy underscored

The District Health Society and District Hospital, Senapati observed World Heart Day under the theme, "Use Heart, Know Heart" at District Hospital, Senapati.
The observation was graced by Dr Sumpi Percy, CMO/Director, District Health Society, Senapati as the chief guest and Dr Helen Shimray, DNO, HNC, Senapati and Dr M Sokha-a, Medical Superintendent, District Hospital, Senapati as the guests of honour.
In the first session of the observation, an awareness and education programme on cardiovascular diseases was held.
Dr Mercy, MO, NCD Clinic, Senapati while delivering the welcome note, appealed to the gathering to be careful of what one eats as unhealthy consumption can affect the heart in the long run.

Speaking at the occasion, Dr Helen Shimray maintained that a person's life majorly depends on proper functioning of the heart.
Stating that World Heart Day is celebrated with a purpose to raise awareness on heart health and highlight the importance of keeping one's heart healthy by going through regular check-ups.
Highlighting that one's life is at risk when the vital organ heart does not function properly, she urged all to take all forms of precautionary measures against heart diseases to avoid unwanted outcomes.
Medical Superintendent, District Hospital, Senapati, Dr M Sokha-a in her speech stated that cardiovascular diseases may lead to stroke, heart failure, high BP, etc.
The Medical Superintendent also emphasized on the importance of knowing what is good for the heart and what is not.
She went on to state how the heart can be affected through one's eating habits including stress, strain and sleeplessness.
Dr Sokha-a mentioned that following a proper diet and healthy regime is one the important measure to keep one's heart healthy.
Expressing concern that heart diseases have become a common problem among the young kids as well as the aged, she appealed to all to control anger, hatred, fear, jealousy, greediness, etc and love one's neighbour, do good and live a good life for a sound heart.
Addressing the gathering, CMO Dr Sumpi Percy said that the day has been observed every year to give awareness on the need to take care of one's heart.
The day is usually observed on September 29 but it has been delayed for Senapati District this year due to some unforeseen circumstances.
Citing that people with high blood pressure, diabetes, alcoholic and great smokers are liable to get heart diseases, the CMO stressed on the need of having a diet consisting of different varieties of food and exercise regularly for a healthy heart.
During the second session of the programme, Yoga session and clinical assessment including measurement of BMI and BP, estimation of blood sugar and lipid profile, ECG test and consultation with Physicians of the District Hospital were done.
