Kakching, October 11 2023:
Even as selling of pig meat at drastically reduced rates made headlines a couple of days back pointing to possible outbreak of Swine fever, large number of pigs have been reported perished in Kakching district with a single pig farmer losing around 50/60 pigs.
The outbreak of the unknown disease, which has so far left many pigs dead in the state mainly in the valley districts, was first reported a couple of months back.
However, the rate of pigs dying increased rapidly only recently.
A team led by Veterinary Department, Thoubal joint director Dr Binokumari came to Kakching district on Tuesday and inspected the carcases and live pigs and collected samples for examining the disease at a laboratory in Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Kakching District Piggery Farmers' Association has expressed gratitude to the joint director for taking up initiative of diagnosing the disease.
The Association has also drawn the attention of the authority concerned for taking up necessary measures to control the situation and extending support to the affected pig farmers.
