Imphal, October 11 2023:
Expressing concern over the frequent assaults on drivers in Manipur sector along both the national highways, All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur State Committee wondered why the state government is not been able to prevent such unwanted incidents from happening.
In a press communique, AITUC Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar pointed out that since the last many years, drivers and assistants have been subjected to atrocities by miscreants along the Imphal-Jiri and Imphal-Dimapur routes of the national highways in addition to destroying essential commodities brought through these highways.
In the latest incident, armed miscreants targeted oil tankers in Rengpang and Nungba area on October 9, assaulted 10 drivers and caused damage to the trucks, the secretary recounted and expressed strong resentment that the state government has failed to put a stop to such unwanted activities along the highways.
Further stating that AITUC had on multiple occasions urged authority concerned to look into the issue and solve the problem but no positive step has been taken up till this day, he contended that such indifferent attitude of the government is directly creating problems to the public and endangering life of the drivers who are in the service of transporting goods for the people.
Therefore, any untoward incident arising out of negligence should be the sole responsibility of the government itself, the release said and added that AITUC will extend full support to the agitation being launched by All Manipur Petroleum Production Drivers' Association.
