Uikey urged to back ST demand

The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union has urged Governor Anusuiya Uikey to support the inclusion of Meeteis/Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe list.
Today, representatives of Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MTU), All Manipur Health Services Doctors' Association, Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board and National Secretary, RPI (A) Maheshwar Thounaojam called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan said the PRO of the Governor.
During the meeting, a six-member team of MTU led by S Gourakishwor Singh submitted a detailed report to the Governor listing out the parameters which affirms the inclusion of the community in the ST list.

The team pointed out that the community is lagging behind on all fronts and therefore ST status is the only hope to safeguard the Meeteis/Meiteis.
Though the community has been demanding inclusion in the ST list for ten years, it has still not been achieved.
Thus, the MTU team urged the Governor to extend all possible support in this regard.
In her response, the Governor said that the process of granting ST status is a long one and all parameters will be looked into by the Scheduled Tribe Commission and Ministry concerned at the Centre.
Adding that she will speak to the Chief Minister on the matter, she asked them to approach the ST Commission for necessary procedures.
A three-member team of All Manipur Health Services Doctors' Association (AMHSDA), Manipur also called on the Governor and submitted a memorandum highlighting their demand to increase the superannuation age of doctors in Manipur from 62 to 65 .
Other demands of AMHSDA include giving of Non Practising Allowance to doctors, amending service rules and improving service conditions of doctors.
The Governor assured to talk to Chief Minister N Biren Singh to address their grievances at the earliest.
Separately, National Secretary of Republican Party of India (Athavale) Maheshwar Thounaojam along with one member of the party apprised Governor Uikey of the prevailing situation in the State.
Citing the recent incident of the killing of a police officer in Moreh, he alleged that the present situation is mainly because of "external aggression" with the involvement of "foreign terrorists" and the Central leaders have also acknowledged it.
Claiming that many cases of violation of ground rules by Kuki militants have been witnessed, he asserted that it is high time to take a concrete step to end the conflict.
He also raised the issues of poppy cultivation and the kidnapping and killing of Phijam Hemanjit and Linthoingambi Hijam.
The Governor said that the Central and State Government are in touch with intelligence agencies to chalk out plans and appropriate security measures are already in place to avoid further eventualities.
She added that hatred between the two communities should be removed to mend the trust deficit and all should come forward for dialogue.
Lastly, calling on the Governor this evening, a five-member team of Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board, Imphal invited her to attend the cultural workshop which will be organised in collaboration with Manipur University of Culture from November 11 to 26 at the temple.
Promptly accepting their invitation, Governor Uikey also felicitated the Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board members by presenting a shawl and memento each.
