Imphal, July 12 2023:
While strongly denouncing hate speeches, communal comments/statements/proclamations being articulated and issued in Manipur, North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) demanded initiation of strict actions against any public authority fanning communal discord.
In a release, NEFIS acknowledged that all people have the democratic right to raise their concerns in a democratic manner.
However, the communal and hate speeches, especially of public authorities, are especially condemnable and need to be immediately addressed by the judiciary.
NEFIS suggested that the Supreme Court intervene and take suo moto cognizance of such hate speeches and communal comments being made and spread in Manipur.
Moreover, weapons and ammunition looted from the state armories (cote) and police training centre should be recovered and the Supreme Court should ask the state government for a status report in this regard.
Supreme Court should also ensure that all measures are taken to bring justice and peace to the whole state, it stressed and appealed to all sections of society to stop violence against each other and initiate dialogue to find a political solution to the current crisis.
NEFIS also demanded that all measures which fuelled the current tension should be withdrawn, and all communities should take a step back and put forth all the contentious issues for deliberation and larger consultation.
In this respect, a Truth and Reconciliation Commission should be established to ensure justice and peace in the state so that people can safely return to their villages and rebuild their lives, it added.
