Imphal, July 29 2023:
Chief minister N Biren Singh has written to Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the deadline for filing different taxes under Income Tax Act, Goods & Services Tax, Companies Act and other related Acts, till December 31 owing to the prevailing situation in the state.
According to the letter, the people of Manipur, particularly business professionals and salaried persons are finding it difficult to file their taxes within a short period of time due to the unrest situation in state for the last two-and-half months.
Failing to file the taxes under the different Acts is bound to attract huge penalties and fines.
However, it would put immense burden on the tax payers, who pay taxes regularly to pay hefty fines and penalties for failing to meet the deadline due to no fault of theirs.
In addition, the internet ban in the state is a huge problem, which makes it impossible to upload the required documents in time.
Thus, the letter requested the union finance minister to extend the deadline for filing taxes by December 31 so as to lessen the burden on the people and allow their business to run smoothly.
