MSCW to submit draft gender policy to Govt

With an aim to reduce gender inequality and curb violence against women, Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW) has completed framing of a draft gender policy which will be submitted to the state government within this month, informed MSCW chairperson Ulka Salam.
Speaking at the 17th foundation day celebration of MSCW at its Lamphelpat DC office complex here on Friday, Ulka Salam informed that for a society to develop there is the need to ensure equal rights and opportunities to both genders.
Only when both are treated equally, the rate of crimes and atrocities against women and children can be reduced.
Though Manipur is a state where women are highly regarded, yet the rate of gender-based crime is still high, she pointed out and also prayed that the crisis in the state comes to end and peace is restored at the earliest.
Stating that the commission has been visiting relief camps in different parts of the state, Ulka Salam said that it also provided relief materials to the relief camps in addition to taking up suo moto cases of crimes committed against women during the crisis and is following up on the cases.
Mentioning on the number of cases referred to the commission since the last one year, Ulka Salam said that the commission has received 59 cases, of which 36 cases have been settled, four kept in abeyance and 19 cases under process.
Among the cases registered with the commission, 39 are from the general category, 10 from Muslim community, eight from scheduled tribes and two are from scheduled caste category.
Majority of the cases registered are related with domestic violence, she revealed.
The chairperson further informed that of the total cases registered, 27 cases were received from Imphal West district, 15 from Imphal East, five from Thoubal, four from Kakching, three from Bishnupur, two from Kangpokpi and one each from Churachandpur, Chandel, Tengnoupal and Jiribam districts.
Ulka maintained that the commission has opened One Stop Centre in all the districts and closely monitoring the condition of the women.
She also informed that the commission will take up a programme titled "Meet the Women" shortly where women would be interviewed to assess their issues and problems and the recommendations for taking up remedial measures sent to the government.
The budget for the same has been included in the action plan of the commission.
The commission is also planning to launch an awareness programme on the theme Houro Nupi in all the districts while a study programme exclusively for tribal and Muslim women is also in the pipeline, she said while adding that steps to give awareness on the need for marriage registration will be taken up as well.
The function was also attended by commission members Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, Lourembam Dayabati and T Chuongsin Koireng as presidium members.
After the programme, the commission members visited Needy Home in Langol Laimanai and the relief camps opened in Khuman Lampak and Wangkhei High School and provided edibles to the inmates.
