Even as the State Government has taken up special arrangements to provide protection to farmers working in the paddy field, one farmer working in the field was hurt in firing by Kuki militants at Phubala area today.
Another person was hurt in an explosion at Kwakta in Bishnupur district today.
The farmer who sustained bullet injury has been identified as Yumnam Ranjan Singh of Phubala Ward No 2 .
A bullet struck him on the right buttock.
He is receiving treatment at Raj Medicity.
He was with other farmers working in the field at around 8.30 am at Phubala Maning Chinglou Loukon.
While working the field, they heard someone whistling and minutes later, bullets rained on them, said some of the farmers.
The Kuki militants fired several rounds of bullets at them from Langjing Manbi Reserved Forest side.
They immediately couched on the ground for cover and Ranjan was hit by a bullet, they said.
The farmers said there were personnel of the BSF and Sikh Regiment deployed in the area, but they didn't respond to the firing.
Locals of the area took out a protest demonstration and demanded immediate removal of , the "ineffective and partial" Central security forces from the area.
It may be noted that the areas surrounding the Langjing Manbi Reserved Forest are mainly inhabited by the Kom community and there are no Kuki villages in the areas.
On the other hand, the person hurt in the explosion has been identified as Md Warish (18), son of Ayub Khan of Kwakta Ward No 8 .
He was initially rushed to PHC Kwakta before referring to the District Hospital Bishnupur and later brought to Raj Medicity.
The explosion took place at around 9.40 am at Kwakta Municipal Council Ward No 8 under Phougakchao Ikhai police station.
It is suspected that the explosion was caused by a lathode bomb.
The explosion occurred some time after Kuki militants warned the residents to vacate the area in the morning.
While most of the residents had vacated the area, Warish had returned home for lunch.
Notably, a bomb fitted Scorpio had exploded in the Kwakta area hurting at least three persons including minors on June 21 recently.
