Man convicted in 2008 rape case

Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court) for Crime against Women, Manipur has convicted a man for raping an underage girl in 2008 .
On Monday, accused Maimom Abo (38) s/o (L) Kalamu of Sanjenbam Makha Leikai was produced before the court.
During the hearing of the case, the prosecution submitted to the Court that on May 16, 2008, the victim's mother filed a report to the OC of Lamsang police station.
The report said that Abo sexually assaulted the girl during March-May of the same year.
Based on the report, the PS registered a case and launched an investigation.
As the trial could not be conducted in the Sessions Court, the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Imphal West submit ted the case to Sessions Judge Imphal West, which the latter received on July 25, 2013 .
On November 16, 2015, Sessions Judge Imphal West framed charges against the accused under Section 376 of IPC.
On July 26, 2018 the case was transferred to Additional Sessions Judge (FTC) for Crime against Women, Manipur and received on August 18 the same year.
According to the charges, the accused sexually assaulted the victim on March 3, 2008 around 2.30pm at his residence, and again on April 24 around 1 pm at Makhong Turel Mapal.
The accused again assaulted the victim at a canal along Sanjenbam-Leitong road around 2.30 pm on May 1 and on May 15 around 11am at the residence of another victim.
After the charges were framed against the accused, he was informed of the charges in detail and asked whether he accept the same Or not.
The accused pleaded not guilty and requested for a trial.
During the trial, the prosecution examined eight witnesses.
The court, after examining the details, declared accused Abo guilty on Monday.
It then fixed January 13 for the sentence hearing.
