As a part of the 50th anniversary of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), a day-long sensitisation programme on electoral literacy was organised at Manipur Press Club under the joint aegis of AMWJU and office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Manipur, on Monday.
The programme was attended by Manipur CEO PK Jha and AMWJU president Bijoy Kakchingtabam as chief guest and president respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, PK Jha noted that in addition to playing an important role in enriching democracy, the media has an equally responsible part in creating awareness on the rights of voters and disseminating right information to the public.
Moreover, the media should play a vital role in ensuring conduct of elections in the most ethical and transparent manner, he stressed.
The CEO informed that a number of interactive programmes on different issues with the media fraternity has been organised in the past and the sensitisation programme on electoral literacy on Monday is apt considering the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as EVM checking and other preparations for the election have already been started.
Jha also said that transparency was maintained in conducting elections in the past and that there was no partiality shown to any party.
Delivering the presidential speech, Bijoy Kakchingtabam expressed confidence that the sensitisation programme will help the media persons collect news on election and disseminate the authentic information and messages to the public.
Media persons should take the opportunity to get the best out of the programme, he said.
