Imphal, July 14 2023:
The Manipur Baptist Convention (MBC) in a letter addressed to the Law Commission of India conveyed its concerns to the proposed enactment of Uniform Civil Code (UCC) .
The MBC is the apex body of Baptist Christians comprising 30 Associations from all ethnic communities in the State of Manipur.
Copies of the letter were also submitted to the President of India, Prime Minister, Union Minister of Law & Justice, and the Lok Sabha MP of Manipur through the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West District.
The letter, a copy of which the Sangai Express has, stated that the MBC is very doubtful that enactment of a UCC will strengthen the secular fabric of the country enshrined in the Constitution of India.
It raises concerns that the enactment of the UCC will be counterproductive to the existing unity in diversity and will adversely affect professing of different religious faiths too.
Stating that democracy is not a brute rule of majority but also respect & requirement of minority voices too, the Convention shared that it would be unreasonable and inexpedient to impose a UCC.
If enacted, the MBC is concerned that the UCC would particularly affect the interest of the backward classes & minorities and its traditions, customs, social and economic rights including legal rights.
Therefore, the MBC appealed that in the interest of law-abiding citizens of India, particularly the Christian communities, minorities, backward classes and the tribals, the UCC is best not enforced.
