Assault of 4 Tangkhul girls issue settled

The issues arising out of the physical assault of four girls from Ukhrul district on May 24 at Kwakeithel was settled amicably via Tangkhul customary law today.
A joint consultative meeting of Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) and family of the victim women was held at Wunghon village community hall chaired by the president of TNL David K' Shimray.
During the course of discussion, the issue was deliberated minutely and it was mutually agreed to settle the case through Tangkhul customary law.
A "Compromise Deed" was then signed by TNL president David, Turner Raihing, chairman of Wunghon village, Somendro Thokchom, media co-ordinator COCOMI.

Others who signed the deed included Shomi Angkhang, chairman of South Tangkhul, Dearson Chamroy, chairman of North Tangkhul and Ngaraipam R Shimray, father of one of the victims.
Later, TNL president David expressed the need for restoring normalcy in the State and early implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
He asserted that the present crisis in Manipur is due to the failure of the State Government.
Media co-ordinator of COCOMI, Somendro Thokchom expressed gratitude for accepting the apology and forgiving them.
The incident of May 24 was unfortunate.
The four women were assaulted by a mob when tension was high among the people.
The tolerance and understanding of the Tangkhul community have averted further escalation and unwanted incidents, he said.
Subsequently, Somendro Thokchom handed over a token to TNL president David as a mark of gratitude for resolving the case honorably.
COCOMI team was led by Somendro Thokchom, Romesh, Kiran Kumar, Ph Shyamchandra and Santosh while the members from Tangkhul community included TNL president David K Shimray, South Tangkhul chairman Shomi Angkang, North Tangkhul chairman Dearson Chamroy, chairman of Wunghon village and a host of TNL executives including the parents of the victims.
A common feast was organised to mark settlement and reconciliation.
